Scarborough community support group

Together, Yet With Space to Be Yourselves

Carers and dementia companions meeting in separate groups, sharing conversation and companionship while remaining close at hand to one another.

Welcome

A friendly place for carers and companions

Carers & Dementia Companions was created because local carers recognised there was nowhere they could meet others facing similar challenges while remaining close to the person they care for.

Our sessions bring carers and people living with dementia together in the same welcoming venue, but in separate groups. This gives both carers and companions the opportunity to enjoy conversation, friendship and mutual support with people who share similar experiences, while remaining visible and close enough to one another for reassurance whenever needed.

Over tea, coffee and biscuits, friendships are formed, experiences are shared and everyone is welcomed as part of a supportive community.

Why we meet

Support, conversation and understanding for both groups

For carers

Time to talk openly with fellow carers who understand the rewards and challenges of supporting someone living with dementia.

For companions

A welcoming group nearby where dementia companions are encouraged to chat, get to know one another and share their own experiences.

For reassurance

The two groups remain close enough to see one another and come together whenever support or reassurance is needed.

What to expect

Simple, relaxed and welcoming

Every session is informal and friendly. Carers gather together to enjoy tea, coffee, biscuits and conversation with others who understand.

At the same time, dementia companions meet as their own group nearby. They are encouraged to chat, get to know one another and share their own experiences in a comfortable and supportive environment.

There are no complicated programmes, no pressure and no expectations — just a warm welcome, good company and the opportunity to spend time with people who understand.

Our wider area

Supporting carers across the area

While our meetings are based in Scarborough, we warmly welcome carers and dementia companions from Scarborough, Whitby, Filey and Ryedale.

Our aim is to create a supportive community for anyone affected by dementia, wherever they live in the area. As the group develops, and if there is sufficient demand, we would be pleased to consider establishing similar meetings in other locations so that more people can access friendship, support and companionship closer to home.
